Siem Reap - Visiting the temples

Six years ago I was standing in a travelagency on Khao San Road in Bangkok to book a flight to Siem Reap, out of ecological reasons I dicided not to go, but made it now by bicycle to the biggest temple in the world, Angkor Wat.
The city that these temples belong to had more than a million inhabitants in its time of prosperity. Today only the temples remain, besides Angkor Wat a whole lot of others, because everything else was built of wood. Each temple has its own characteristics, Angkor Wat impressed with its size and hight of the buildings. Since one has to climb steep staircaises to get to the top of the towers, the view is a great reward for the effort.
The second temple we visited at this day was Angkor Thom, which was built in the 12. century for king Jayavarman VII like Angkor Wat. Here we walked through the stunning Bayon. It's 54 towers bear 216 faces that smile a you in almost every place in the temple.

To enjoy the acme together with Laurent (he was still in bed with fever), Amir, Omry and me did not visit Angkor Wat. We went to some other, less frequented temples that were not less enthralling to explore. For sunset we came to a group of temples near the village Roluos and the temple Bakong had a special emanation. Maybe I felt this way because there were a lot of monks near the temple, since there is a aktiv monastery next to the old temple.
